Title: 1979 instrument panel and painless wiring kit.
Post by: clayton on June 11, 2008, 09:08:25 PM
the car is a 79 trans am and it has a 403 big block and automatic tansmission both newly rebuilt. the previous owner had installed a painless wiring kit. the car starts, runs and idles and drives, it even has a few aftermarket parts under the hood, and all exterior lighting is in order, but the instrument panel has not been finished. i need some help finding out how to finish this wiring nightmare regarding the instrument panel only. any info would be greatly appreciated......

Basically you need to pick up a wiring diagram for the dash.  The Service manual from those years will have the wiring diagrams in there that you should be able to follow to get the wiring issues worked out.

Well, like I said above, you need the original Service Manuals, NOT the Chiltons Manual.  The Chiltons manual os for simple maintenence items and things like that.  The original Service Manuals have complete wiring diagrams and schematics that will show you where and what everything does.  See the photos below for just an example of what you will find in the original Service Manuals from Pontiac.

Well, I sell them on my site in CD and PDF form here: http://store.78ta.com

Or, you can pick up the book version at places like Faxon Auto Lit or Books 4 Cars.

I bought a cd manual from Hitman and I would have not gotten as far as I did with out it.  Highly recommend it.
