Everyone I've talked to that has dropped a gas tank has had to drop the WHOLE rear axle.

You're very welcome.  It's definitely not an easy task on Third Gens BECAUSE you have to drop the rear axle.  I'm soooo not looking forward to the day my fuel pump goes out.  :-\

I know this is late and you probably have your car back together. I changed the fuel pump in my 91 camaro and yes it was a pain. Before I reinstalled the tank I used a drimmel and trimmed about an 1/8" of the inner body where the filler neck comes through the inner body to the outer body. This made re-installing the tank much easier and I won't have to fight to get the filler neck past the inner body should I have to ever take the tank out again.
