1979 Pontiac engine for Trans Am- worth?
« on: July 14, 2010, 09:10:28 PM »
Hi All, I have a motor from a 1979 Trans Am, it is the Pontiac 400  6.6L. I no longer have the car and am trying to determine if the block is worth anything and though someone in the club may offer some opinions. It would need to rebuilt but might be worth something to someone restoring a similar model. Thanks for your feedback!

I would need all the codes and casting #'s  from it to tell what it is for sure.  is it a XX block?  6x4 heads.

If it's a 79 400 I think thats one of the left overs from 78 and it was paired with a manual trans. If it is a 79 400 it may be worth 100-200 with all the accessories but not much more. People rebuilding 400's want the earlier years because of the solid casting and no webbing.

100 to 200.00?  ya right!!??

there was only 2485 400 put in the trans am,  2917 400's in t-top trans am's and  1107 400's put in the SE Trans Am
all were a 4 speed car.  and I believe all were a W72 400

thats only 6509  400 motors in 79  out of 117,108  birds built .
If I had one it would not be for sale, but should be worth 500 or more it its all there.
