What do I have?
« on: January 12, 2007, 09:49:02 PM »
Hi, I purchased a 1981 Trans Am with a Pontiac motor in it, but I really don't know exactly what block I have. I have looked at the codes for the intake (the number is 9799068, so i think it is a 1970 400 intake) and the heads which bare the number 12 (which I belive are 1970 400 headers either Ram Air III or MT Ram Air III)I also found the number D220, which is the head casting date. The information on the block I do have is the V.I.N code which is SR8349, and from research, it doesn't look like any code ever put on a Pontiac block. The engine code which determines the original application of the engine is not printed on the block for some reason. The block casting number is 485428 and the date code I belive is AL13. It appears to be a stock configration (the intake and block) because the paint show no sign of the block and intake being taken apart from each other. I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know what year and what kind of engine this is. Thanks for any help!

485428 is the casting number for a 1971-1974 455 block. The date code is probably A 11 3 (January 11, 1973).

You can confirm that its a 455 block by looking at the underside of the block on the drivers side, toward the front, near where the fuel pump mounts. It should have "455" cast into it there.

With 1970 #12 heads, you must be making some serious compression, unless you have dished pistons.

By the way, here is a list of casting codes for pontiac engine components. The red text is hot linked to the lists.
