Trying to locate 69 bird using VIN#
« on: February 05, 2007, 10:00:13 PM »
My husband is trying to locate the 69 bird he owned. We have the VIN #, but have found it almost impossible to trace a VIN # prior to 1980. We contacted the state he last registered it in, and were told the records had been purged. Can anyone tell me where to look for info on this car?
Thank you,
Annette

He bought it new in 69, and traded it sometime in 72.

Could you furnish VIN and the name of the selling dealer if you know it?
I have a friend in Calif. that has access a some old dealer records and has in the past been able to track down some vehicles others could not. Although he & I  haven't as yet tried to track a Firebird.
Thanks.

The VIN # is 223379N116121. The dealership is no longer in business. The name was Sherilla (sp?) Pontiac located in Hermiston, Oregon. He traded it in Portland, Oregon. He thinks the name of the dealership was Marv Tonkin (not Ron Tonkin) maybe brothers? The lot is still there, but now under the Ron Tonkin name.

Thanks,
Annette

Annette:

No Oregon owner information found currently on file. Oregon Deptartment of Motor Vehicle says records are purged after 12 years. So far VIN has produced a transfer of ownership in April 1979 in the State of Washington. Records John found did not furnish ID of transferor or transferee. Just the month and year. No track after April 1979 found. Not even a Washinton plate registration. Not a good sign. This sometimes indicates that a car isn't road worthy and therfore wasn't licensed. Might have been salvaged.
Sorry we can't do better.
