I don't know a lot about rear ends. I do know that my '79 came with the 403 with an automatic. They used 3 different rear ends in those. Highest was like 2:42-1 and lowest like 2:73. The 4 speed cars were 3:08's. My question is ... Can I buy 3:23 gears and install them in the rear end I have?

Somebody was telling me about the 300 series rear end. Can someone please explain this? Thanks

Look at the passenger side axle tube. There is a stamped code. Like PJ or PX or something like that. Then look up the code once you find it. You can switch gears but may have to switch the differential carrier as well.
