I have the same problem as Wink 1.  I am looking for the 1978 DKM Macho Trans-Am #196 that I had to sell in July of 1989. Not enough VIN numbers to track. I have looked on all the DKM restoration sites and #196 never shows up. The vin#on it was 2W87Z8L184202. It was taken to auction from Lively-Olds Cadillac GMC in Longview , Texas. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I will attempt to track the car with the information you have supplied. Is July of 89 the approximate time it went to auction? This is kind of important to verify because the window of opportunity is usually very narrow.

yes, it had to be July of '89 or the first part of August as I was buying my first home and was scrambling for the down payment.  The closing for the house was on Aug 23 1989.

Still waiting to hear from Mecham. They sent one email on Saturday asking for the model year. Haven't heard anything new since then.

Louisiana public records leave a lot to be desired. (Not easilyaccessed) No information from there as yet. Nothing on public record found in Oklahoma.

Stolen vehicles are usually altered or "parted out" and not registered with their respective VIN, especially given the check and balances regarding vehicle titles that existed in 1989. It is entirely possible the subject vehicle could have been registered almost anywhere, even outside the U.S., using a false VIN. It is possible the VIN we are looking for was never "officially" recorded anywhere after July 27, 1989.

By the way, in case you are wondering how I have access to certain information, I don't believe I mentioned that I am licensed as a Private Investigator in Ohio and I am a 5-year member of the Ohio State Auto Theft Association.The OATIA board is very interested in auto theft regardless of when it occurred.

In September of 2006 I found a 1967 Camaro locally, that was stolen in Salt Lake City Utah in 1968. Car as found was setup for drag racing. The then current owner purchsed it in 1972 sans engine, transmission and also without certificate of title, from a swap meet car corral for $500 cash. As the vehcile was going to be used exclusively for drag racing he tought he had just made the deal of a lifetime. After 34 years, countless hours of labor and many thousands of dollars invested, the Camaro, with a present value of over $30,000, was reclaimed by its original owner.

I am sorry to report that I have no new information related to the Firebird you are looking for. This doesn't mean it is gone, it just means the databases I have access to don't list it. The car could very well be alive and well.
We gave it our best shot and came up a little short. I archeived your VIN into the system so if the number pops up we will know. You never know it might just show up in a later search.
