94 Firebird A/C resistor question

Hey,
   I have a 1994 Firebird, with the 3.4L v6, and my a/c only works on the highest setting. From what I understand it runs by sending a charge through one of 4 wires to the blower motor, and it runs. The wire have different resistances, and it thus has different blower speeds. Is it possible to replace the wires and splice a resistor of equal resistance onto the wires, to get the resistance in the wires? Instead of spending $200 to get the wire harness from Pontiac?
