i recently found a 1977 trans am with a motor code of n 400 but upon inspection of the motor i found an xa code on the pass side of timing cover my understanding is this a 455 73-74 but my question is what was a 73-74 sd455 stamped with

No, that engine code is right.  The XA code was used for the L78 Pontiac 400 in 1977.  In 1977, the W72 Pontiac 400's had engine codes of Y6, YG, and WA (manual).  So, your XA code is right for a 1977 Pontiac L78 400.  The 1973 and 1974 Super Duty engines were stamped with a Y8 for an automatic and W8 for a manual.  You can check out all the engine codes on my site here: http://www.78ta.com/enginecodes.php
